    Pro bono work

At Gair Legal, we believe everyone deserves access to justice. Our team regularly contributes pro bono legal services to individuals and organisations in need. This work allows us to support our community, broaden our perspective, and use our expertise to make a meaningful difference beyond our usual practice.

Access to legal representation should not be determined solely by financial means. Through targeted pro bono work, we provide assistance to individuals facing genuine hardship who cannot obtain Legal Aid or otherwise access legal support. Our lawyers bring the same rigour and attention to pro bono matters as they do to our commercial work, ensuring clients receive quality representation regardless of their circumstances. This commitment extends beyond individual casework to include community legal education initiatives and support for organisations working to advance access to justice in New South Wales and beyond.

Pro bono work enriches our practice in meaningful ways. It exposes our lawyers to different areas of law, diverse client circumstances, and systemic issues that inform our broader understanding of the legal system. For a defendant insurance practice like ours, engaging with pro bono matters provides valuable perspective on the other side of the table and reinforces why procedural fairness, ethical conduct, and access to representation matter across all areas of legal practice. We view this work not as peripheral to our business, but as integral to our identity as a responsible legal practice serving the broader community.

We're building a responsible law firm for the long term. We prioritise sustainable business practices, support our people's wellbeing and development, and maintain rigorous governance standards across everything we do. As we grow, we're committed to operating ethically, minimising our environmental footprint, and contributing positively to the communities where we work.

Sustainability and responsible business practices are increasingly important to our clients, our people, and the broader insurance and legal sectors. We take our environmental responsibilities seriously by implementing practical measures to reduce our impact: minimising paper consumption through digital workflows, choosing suppliers with strong environmental credentials, and making energy-efficient choices in our office operations. As a professional services firm, our environmental footprint is primarily indirect through our supply chain and business travel, and we're committed to making informed decisions that reduce emissions and waste wherever possible.

Our ESG commitment extends beyond environmental considerations. We invest in our people through professional development, wellbeing initiatives, and workplace policies that support work-life integration. We maintain transparent governance structures with clear accountability, ethical decision-making frameworks, and robust risk management protocols. Our clients—primarily insurers and self-insurers—increasingly expect their legal partners to demonstrate responsible business practices, and we're building our ESG capabilities to meet those expectations while contributing to positive social and environmental outcomes in the personal injury and insurance defence sectors.

We're committed to building a workplace where different perspectives, backgrounds and experiences are valued. We foster an inclusive culture where everyone can contribute, develop and succeed on merit. Diverse teams make better decisions — it's not just the right thing to do, it's essential to delivering the quality of service our clients expect.

Inclusion starts with creating an environment where people feel they belong and can bring their whole selves to work. We recognise that talent comes from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, and that our effectiveness as a firm is enhanced when our team reflects different perspectives and approaches. For a defendant personal injury and insurance practice, this diversity of thought is particularly valuable: our work requires us to understand complex human situations, work with clients and claimants from all walks of life, and navigate sensitive matters with empathy and cultural awareness. Teams with varied experiences and backgrounds are better equipped to spot issues, challenge assumptions, and deliver commercially sound advice that accounts for real-world complexity.

We're building our diversity and inclusion practices deliberately and pragmatically. This includes ensuring our recruitment processes reach diverse candidate pools, creating pathways for career progression that are transparent and merit-based, and fostering a workplace culture where people are supported to develop professionally regardless of their background. We recognise that meaningful progress requires ongoing commitment, honest reflection about where we can improve, and practical action to remove barriers to opportunity. Our focus is on creating genuine inclusion—not just diversity in numbers, but an environment where different voices are heard, valued, and integrated into how we work and make decisions.

We handle sensitive personal and claims information daily, and we take that responsibility seriously. Privacy isn't just a compliance requirement — it's fundamental to the trust our clients place in us.

Personal injury and insurance defence work involves collecting, storing, and managing highly sensitive information: medical records, employment history, financial details, witness statements, and claims documentation. This information is often deeply personal and is provided to us under circumstances where individuals are vulnerable. We recognise that our clients—insurers and self-insurers—entrust us with this data on the understanding that it will be protected with the highest standards of care. Our approach to privacy and data security reflects this responsibility: robust technical safeguards, clear information handling protocols, restricted access controls, secure file sharing systems, and regular staff training on privacy obligations under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and Australian Privacy Principles.

We treat privacy as a core operational discipline, not an administrative afterthought. Our systems and processes are designed to minimise data breach risk, ensure information is used only for its intended purpose, and enable prompt and effective response should any incident occur. We maintain clear data breach response protocols aligned with notifiable data breach requirements, conduct regular security reviews, and stay current with evolving privacy regulations and insurance sector expectations. In a digital environment where cyber threats are increasingly sophisticated, and where regulatory scrutiny of data handling continues to intensify, we invest in the infrastructure and practices necessary to protect the information our clients and their claimants entrust to us.
